Getting Good at Getting Great
“Here’s all I want this poem to do: is help us see that who we are and what we do, is born of habits through and through. We are our habits, that is what’s true! Yet these habits you don’t have! For …. they …. have …. You!” - Andrew Sykes
This month, our theme is Getting Good at Getting Great! The new year marks a stage for reinvention. We tend to set new goals, shift our mindsets and prioritize habits that guide our growth. And although we often invest in our vision, we tend to pay less attention to the little steps that will help us achieve the extraordinary!
New goals require that we build support structures to help us follow through on our intentions. This includes forming feedback alliances with our coaches or mentors to hold us accountable and give us feedback that is tied to our performance goals.
We suggest the 2x2 Feedback Model that requires a coach (the feedback provider) and a performer (the receiver) and happens immediately after a practice or performance. Being on both the giving and receiving ends of 2x2 Feedback requires that you hold a posture of openness, curiosity, humility, generosity and honesty.
Expert moves:
Take notes!
Ask “HOW” questions to clarify the coach’s feedback.
Frame the conversation to focus on what can be “DONE DIFFERENTLY” instead of “done better”.
Stick to ONE feedback area to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
